Project – Plant Room Upgrade

Our team here at Mechanical Control specialise in heating; our engineers are all fully trained and can provide a range of commercial and domestic services. Due to the commercial heating solutions we can offer clients, Florence Nightingale Medical Centre contacted us in Harlow; they needed help with an old and unreliable on-site plant.

Although the medical centre had an on-site heating plant, it was regularly failing, meaning they were struggling with heating and hot water reliability; not only that, but the appliances within the plant room were suffering from condensation, in turn, not offering any form of energy efficiency.

The client reached out to our team, and we agreed on a set price; with all of the jobs we carry out, the price is based on the customer’s individual needs, so we quoted based on the work and time it was going to take to fix the problems within the plant room. This work was carried out in the Summer of 2022; it was done in a way that meant the medical centre could remain open for the patients to get the treatment they needed.

The Work Carried Out

To fix the issues within the plant room, we installed two new fully condensing cascades Worcester Condense 7000 boilers; these are top-of-the-range boilers with low NOx levels and are 20% hydrogen ready. These were also installed complete with a plate heat exchanger; this was done because it offered protection to the new boilers, and keeping them safe is the highest priority.

Then we installed a fully condensing AO Smith Cyclone Water Heater.

The old control panels were then replaced with a brand new panel complete with Trend BMS system; this allows for utterly remote login access, allowing the user to change settings and identify any faults before they are reported.

Two new Mikrofill pressurisation units and new Grundfos Magna twin-headed pump sets were fitted from there.

Finally, we replaced the old faulty thermostatic radiator valves throughout the entire site; whilst all of this was being carried out, we had to work effectively and efficiently not to disrupt the daily working of the medical centre.

The Outcome

The project’s successful outcome is installing a reliable plant and minimised breakdowns. With the installation of new fully condensing equipment and a BMS control system, energy savings are expected to be huge. These energy savings will reduce operating costs and contribute to the site’s sustainability efforts.

In addition to improved energy efficiency, the site now has access to remote alarm notifications in the event of any issues with the plant. This will ensure prompt response and prevent any potential damage to the equipment. Installing a new plant and incorporating a BMS system has also improved access to all plants, making maintenance and repairs easier and more efficient.

The client has recognised the project’s success, as Mechanical Control has been asked to upgrade another plant room for the same client in the summer of 2023. This demonstrates the trust and confidence that the client has in Mechanical Control’s expertise and ability to deliver successful outcomes.

Overall, the project has been a success with positive outcomes that will benefit the site’s operations for years. The improvements not only improve energy efficiency and reduce costs but also ensure that the site’s equipment is reliable and easily maintainable.

The recognition from the client for Mechanical Control’s work on this project is a testament to their commitment to providing quality services and solutions.
